New Instructor Dominique Larue!

DRM_9421 (1)We are super excited to welcome hip hop artist Dominique Larue to our next workshop as a presenter. Dominique will bring her unique perspective to the Columbus Museum of Art (new location!!) on October 6th. You may have seen Dominique on a billboard near you as she is part of the GCAC “Columbus Makes Art” campaign which highlights artists doing their thing in Columbus Ohio. More to come but for now here’s a little insight on Larue:

Born and bred on the north side of Columbus, Ohio, Larue was greatly influenced by Gospel and R&B, but it was her older brother who introduced her to Hip Hop. Influences from A Tribe Called Quest, Fugees, Outkast, Def Squad, and Busta Rhymes and it was in her elementary years that she realized just how influential her brothers music had actually been.

At 7 years old, Larue made her first attempt at writing a rhyme, “I will never forget that day because it was the first day of the rest of my life.” And although Larue does not remember the song she and her friend wrote, if it hadn‟t been for that song, she wouldn’t be rapping today.

She has released several records including in 2015 when she joined forces with legendary Hip Hop pioneer Monie Love, MyVerse, and Carolina Dirty to form the rap supergroup Heresy.

Their self-titled EP released in August 2015.  Recently a song of hers was placed in a movie called, “The Challenger,” starring Kent Moran and the late Michael Clarke Duncan released in 2015. She has landed placements on VH1, MTV, TLC, Fox, Oxygen, The CW and HBO as well. Read more on her Facebook page here.

So Many Announcements

Pardon our dust around here, it’s been a busy summer! We much appreciate everyone coming to the “Breakout Sessions” workshop we had at the Columbus Cultural Arts Center. Matt Monta was insightful, thoughtful, informative, and mind bending with his workshop. He talked about taking a bunch of ideas and condensing them into a small package, aka a song. In other words the idea was not to just write a bunch of stuff down but to transform your words into poetry. The workshop was great look out for more “Breakout Sessions” in our continuing effort to provide the community with quality classes on writing.

The Columbus Museum of Art will be partnering with us to present the October 6th Columbus Songwriting Workshop! We are super excited to have this Columbus institution on board! We had a small introduction to the space at our July 12th Informal Song Share, check our Facebook for details on upcoming song shares. They are free, and it’s just a chance to share a new or old song with friends, simple enough!

Mark your calendars for October 6th. Our first instructor will be Jesse Henry. If you don’t know, Jesse is one of the finest musicians that has come out of Columbus in many many years. His eclectic sound channels anyone from Woody Guthrie to Louis Jordan. He’ll mak you cry witha  sweet country ballad, and in the next moment he’ll have you on the dance floor. We could go all day and he has many more accolades (started a music school in Africa, has his own guitar method books, fronts several amazing bands, etc) We can’t wait for his class, more details to come on that.

You can still pre-register online here for now, but prices will go up soon so do it now. We’ll be working with CMA as a ticketing agent coming up here as well so stay tuned for those details.

Last Week To Sign Up

The next workshop is this Saturday so if you want to sign up please do today. This next workshop as we’ve said will be a small more focused class with Matt Monta.

More info about the workshop:

DESCRIPTION: Have you ever felt like you had more to say than your song would allow? Attend this workshop to begin using fewer but more powerful words to express your big stories and ideas. In this session you will learn and perform writing exercises to more effectively use your words.

OBJECTIVES: Attendees will receive a brief talk from the instructor and participate in a thought-condensing exercise in which they will be asked to write to a prompt for an extended time. The attendees will then begin re-writing their statement with less time. (ie. 60 second – 30 seconds – 15 seconds – 8 seconds). This exercise is a fun crash-course in demonstrating how a songwriter can more effectively use language to express larger concepts.

BIO: Matt Monta is a full-time songwriter and musician based in Columbus, Ohio with three albums to his name and numerous other songwriting credits. In April 2018 he released Restless Disposition, with his band the Haymakers. Monta performs in Columbus and tours throughout the Midwestern, Southern, and Eastern United States. Read lyrics and learn more about Matt at

WHAT TO BRING: A notebook and pen to take notes and for interactive parts of workshop. No guitar necessary.
